How to Choose the Right Grapple:

Updated: Aug 1

Are you wondering how to choose the right grapple? Grapples are the ideal attachments designed to move logs, rubble, roots, and more. With various types of grapples available, selecting the right one for your job can be challenging. We will explore the two main types of grapples, their features, and factors to consider when choosing the best grapple for your needs.

Types of Grapples

1. Root Rake Grapple (clamshell): Root Rakes work well for forestry applications. They feature a curved or clamshell design with lower tines that allow easy removal of roots and depending on the opening height they can work great for large piles of brush as well as easily handle logs. There can be the standard root rake grapples or you can also purchase the high-capacity version which gives you the ability to carry larger loads as well as having longer rake tines.

2. Rock Grapple: Rock Grapples are the combination of a rock bucket and a grapple giving you some of the capabilities of both attachments. Rock grapples usually come standard with a split-top grapple but pictured below is one with a solid top. It is best used for excavation and demolition projects that involve handling large rocks and boulders. It does best in applications where you are scooping up objects but it can be difficult when using it to grapple objects compared to a Root Rake Grapple.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Grapple Rake

1. Material Type: Consider the type of material you'll be working with most often. If you're dealing with debris such as rocks or pieces of concrete etc., a rock grapple might be more suitable, whereas if you’re using it for forestry applications a root rake grapple will be best. If you need to remove roots, brush, or logs a root rake grapple might be the best choice.

2. Weight Capacity: Ensure the grapple's weight matches your excavator's lifting capacity to avoid overloading. The quality of steel greatly influences the weight of the grapple. When companies use weaker steel they have to make the grapple thicker than necessary which can compromise your lifting capacity. Make sure the company uses quality steel, just because they say it is high quality does not mean it is, check out our steel quality page to learn more about what to look for when purchasing a grapple to ensure you get a grapple that will last you a lifetime!

3. Maintenance and Repair: Choose a grapple with easy maintenance and repair options to minimize downtime and extend the lifespan. Choosing a grapple with high-quality steel can help you avoid bent or broken tines which will save you the headache of dealing with repairs. Operators also look for grapples with greaseable pivot points. Here is more information on grapple maintenance for you to check out. Virnig Grapple Maintenance
